A Brief Overview of Angioplasty and Angiography
Angioplasty is known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Angioplasty is done to unblock clogged coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease. Without the help of open-heart surgery, Angioplasty brings back the blood flow to the heart muscles. It is the only way to treat the patient in an emergency such as a heart attack. If your healthcare professional strongly has a suspicion you have a heart issue, it can also be done as an elective approach.
What is the purpose of angiography?
Angiography is a procedure that examines the condition of your blood arteries and the flow of blood through them. Angiography can sometimes be performed with scans rather than X-rays, and CT angiography and MRI angiography are two types of angiography. For almost all kinds of problems affecting your blood vessels, angiography helps diagnose them.
- Peripheral arterial disease- is a decreased blood supply of blood to leg muscles.
- Angina- low blood supply to the heart muscles resulting in chest pain.
- Blockage in the blood vessels of the kidney.
- Atherosclerosis- in this case, the arteries become narrow, and you may have the risk of heart attack or heart stroke.
- A brain aneurysm- is a blood vessel bulging in your brain.
- Pulmonary embolism or blood clots- an obstruction in the artery that supplies your lungs with oxygen.
- Fluorescein angiography is another type of angiography that is used to inspect the eyes.
Some of these disorders may benefit from angiography to aid in therapy planning.
What is the procedure?
While doing Angioplasty, a thin, long tube is inserted into the patient's blood vessel. After doing so, the surgeon directs it to the clogged artery in the heart. A tiny balloon is attached to the catheter's tip, and the balloon is inflated at the constricted portion of the cardiac artery once the catheter is in position. Furthermore, this procedure pushes the blood clot or plaque against the artery's sidewalls, allowing more blood to flow through.
